Pakistaniat & Progress: The COAS’s Call to Youth

By Aishma Gul

“The dreams of today’s youth are the foundations of tomorrow’s nation.”

This inspiring thought was at the heart of General Syed Asim Munir’s recent address to the young students of Pakistan. In an era where the youth’s potential is often dimmed by the clamour of disinformation and external challenges, the COAS’s message stands as a resounding call for our youth to thrive, create, and steer. But what does that mean for Pakistan’s future? How do the youth materialize this vision into an actionable step? Let us now take a closer look at the COAS’s address and the message it imparts to the young generation of Pakistan.

A Blueprint for Youth Empowerment: The COAS Address

General Syed Asim Munir addressed a gathering of university and college students from all parts of Pakistan on February 12, 2025, in Rawalpindi. His speech was not just a routine interaction, but a guiding framework for youth to navigate the potential and challenges of the 21st century.

Three pillars were emphasized by the COAS;

1. Excellence in Academics and Skill Development

2. National Unity and ‘Pakistaniat’

3. The Role of Youth in Countering External Threats

Let’s get into these pillars and what they mean.

Academics and Skills: The Stepping Stones of Greatness.

The COAS urged students to prioritize academic excellence and skill development, stating that these are the cornerstones of national progress. Pakistan Economic Survey (2024) reports that only 9% of the youth in Pakistan has technical or vocational skills, while, on average, globally this percentage rests at 25%. One key barrier to economic growth and innovation is this skills gap.

General Munir’s call to action aligns with global trends. A World Bank Report (2024) states that countries that have invested in youth education and skills development see a 1.5% increase in their annual GDP growth rate. The youth in Pakistan — 64% of the population under the age of 30 — can make all the difference if given all the appropriate tools to facilitate this growth.

Key Message from COAS:

“Your academic pursuits are not just for personal success but for the collective progress of Pakistan. Equip yourselves with skills that can solve real-world problems and contribute to the nation’s development.”

National Unity and ‘Pakistaniat’: Embracing Our Identity

COAS urged the need for ‘Pakistaniat’ — a term capturing the rich history, culture, and values of Pakistan. This identity must be comprehended and embraced not least for the sake of the intellectual and moral development of our youth.

This message resonates significantly at a time when globalization frequently erases cultural individuality. According to a Gallup Pakistan Survey (2024), while about 78% of the Pakistani youth had a high sense of national pride, only 45% were well aware of the history of Pakistan and its cultural heritage. The concept of ‘Pakistaniat’ that the COAS emphasizes addresses this gap, creating a generation that is grounded in its identity but receptive to globalized discourse.

Key Message from COAS:

“Pakistaniat is not just a word; it is the essence of who we are. It is our history, our culture, and our values. Let it guide you as you navigate the complexities of the modern world.”

3. The Role of Youth in Countering External Threats

General Munir also highlighted Pakistan’s external challenges, especially trans-border terrorism. He paid tribute to the sacrifices of the Pakistani nation and Pak Armed Forces against this scourge. According to the South Asia Terrorism Portal (2024), Pakistan has witnessed a 30% decline in terrorism-related incidents over the past two years, thanks to the relentless efforts of the military and law enforcement agencies.

The COAS asked the youth to actively participate in protecting the country’s sovereignty. While the military secures the borders, the youth of the nation must secure its ideological and intellectual frontiers, he stressed.

Key Message from COAS:

“The threat of terrorism is not just physical; it is also ideological. As future leaders, you must counter extremist narratives with knowledge, tolerance, and unity.”

Empowering Youth as Changemakers

The COAS’ address is an appeal for the youth of Pakistan to rise and own their country. But how can this be achieved?

– Prioritizing Education and Skills: The government along with the private sector should work hand in hand to provide opportunities for technical & vocational training. Schemes such as the Prime Minister’s Youth Skill Development Program are in progress but must be expanded.

Promote Cultural Literacy: Schools and universities should incorporate Pakistan’s history and culture into their curricula. Digital platforms can also play a role in making this knowledge accessible to the masses.

Promote National Cohesion: Young people can lead initiatives which promote national interprovincial harmony, cultural exchange, and promote ‘Pakistaniat.’

Counter Extremism: Youth should harness social media and other mediums to counter extremist narratives and promote peace and tolerance.

General Asim Munir’s address to Pakistan’s youth is not just a speech; it is a roadmap for the nation’s future. The COAS has delivered a vision that speaks to the aspirations of Pakistan’s youth by prioritizing academic excellence, cultural identity, and national security.

The youth now holds all the cards. As COAS rightly said, “You are the future leaders of Pakistan. The decisions you take today will determine the future of this country.” For the sake of Pakistan’s future, we must rise to the challenge and forge a prosperous, united, and secure nation.
