Bara: Security forces killed Maulvi Saqib, a key commander of the banned group Lashkar-e-Islam, along with three of his associates during an intelligence-based operation in Tirah Valley, Khyber District, security sources confirmed. The operation targeted a militant hideout following credible intelligence about their presence in the area.
According to security sources, the operation was launched to dismantle the remnants of militant networks in the region. The other slain militants were identified as Luqman and Khalid, while one remains unidentified. Several other militants were reportedly injured in the clash, and a significant cache of arms and ammunition was recovered from the site.
Background of the Operation
The Tirah Valley, once a hub for militant groups like Lashkar-e-Islam and Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), has been a focal point for security operations over the past decade. Lashkar-e-Islam, led by its founder Mangal Bagh until his death in 2021, was notorious for extortion, attacks on security forces, and imposing its strict interpretation of Sharia in the area.
Maulvi Saqib, a prominent leader within the group, was responsible for orchestrating numerous attacks on tribal elders and security installations. His elimination is seen as a significant blow to Lashkar-e-Islam’s operational capabilities in Khyber District.
Militancy in Tirah Valley
Despite extensive military operations such as Zarb-e-Azb and Radd-ul-Fasaad, the valley’s rugged terrain and its proximity to the Afghanistan border make it a challenging area to secure fully. Sporadic militant activity continues, posing a threat to regional stability.
This operation is part of the security forces’ broader efforts to counter the recent uptick in militant attacks in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, which has witnessed a surge in terrorism, particularly in areas bordering Afghanistan.
The successful operation in Tirah highlights the ongoing resolve of security forces to eliminate militant networks and maintain peace in the region.
