Islamabad: Amid escalating violence during protests, the Pakistan Army was deployed under Article 245 to assist civil authorities in maintaining peace in the capital. The decision came after a devastating attack on Srinagar Highway, where a vehicle, driven by a protestor, rammed into security personnel, killing four Rangers and injuring five others, including police personnel. The government has issued shoot-on-sight orders against miscreants involved in acts of terrorism and unrest.
Interior Ministry officials confirmed that the army has been tasked with restoring order as protests turned violent, targeting law enforcement. Security forces have been instructed to respond with full force to anyone attempting to disrupt peace. “Extremist elements will be dealt with decisively to ensure the safety of citizens and the stability of the nation,” a senior official remarked.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif strongly condemned the attack, describing it as a premeditated assault on Pakistan’s defenders. He expressed profound grief over the loss of lives, offering condolences to the families of the martyred and prayers for their strength. “This is not peaceful protest; it is extremism and violence disguised as dissent,” the Prime Minister declared. He directed authorities to apprehend those responsible and ensure they face strict punishment. Furthermore, he instructed hospitals to provide top-tier medical care to the injured.
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif also denounced the violence, calling the attack “unforgivable.” She lamented the loss of brave security officials, noting that they were “sons and brothers” whose lives were cruelly taken. “This bloodshed is not part of any political movement; it is a dark chapter in our history,” she said, emphasizing that the perpetrators must be held accountable.
Authorities have confirmed the arrest of the suspected driver, identified as Hashim, a resident of Islamabad. The suspect claimed he failed to see the security personnel on the road due to poor visibility at night. His vehicle has been impounded, and an investigation is underway.
The violent protests began as demonstrations against alleged political grievances but have spiraled into chaos, with protestors targeting security forces. In the past two days, six law enforcement personnel, including four Rangers and two police officials, have been killed, and over 100 police personnel injured, many critically.
To counter the unrest, the federal government has mobilized all resources, deploying additional security personnel and enforcing strict measures to prevent further violence. Protestors have been accused of deliberately attacking security officials, with officials alleging that these acts are part of a calculated campaign to destabilize the government.
The Prime Minister, reflecting the nation’s mood, paid tribute to the sacrifices of the martyred Rangers and police officials, stating, “Their bravery and commitment to protecting our country will not be forgotten. The entire nation stands with their families.”
As calm begins to return under the army’s oversight, the government remains resolute in its commitment to preventing further bloodshed and holding those responsible for the violence accountable.
