Pakistan Navy Day: Celebrating Operation Dwarka

September 8th is a significant day in Pakistan’s history, marking the sacrifices and achievements of the Pakistan Navy during the War of 1965. This day honours the bravery and valor of the Pakistan Navy’s personnel, who defended the country’s territorial waters and coastline against Indian aggression.

Operation Dwarka: A Daring Strike

In 1965, the Pakistan Navy launched Operation Dwarka, a bold attack on the Indian Navy’s radar station at Dwarka, Gujarat, India. The objective was to destroy the radar station and disrupt Indian naval communications, gaining a strategic advantage in the war.

The Pakistan Navy devised a plan to use its fast-moving warships to launch a surprise attack on the Indian radar station. On the night of September 8, 1965, a flotilla of warships, including the cruisers PNS Babur and PNS Khaibar, and the destroyers PNS Alamgir and PNS Jahangir, approached the Dwarka coast. At around 11:45 pm, the warships opened fire on the Indian radar station, using their guns and rockets. The Indian forces were caught off guard, and the radar station was quickly destroyed.

Operation Dwarka was a significant naval victory for Pakistan, marking a turning point in the war. The operation showcased the Pakistan Navy’s capabilities and its ability to conduct complex and daring operations. It also boosted the morale of the Pakistan Navy and the nation as a whole.

Pakistan Navy Day is observed with various ceremonies and events across the country, including flag-hoisting ceremonies, parades, wreath-laying ceremonies at naval memorials, seminars, and exhibitions showcasing naval equipment and capabilities.
