Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, addressing the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit (SCO), has demanded that the Afghan interim government take action against the Tehrek e Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and other groups, by the UN Security Council resolution and the Doha Agreement, to prevent the use of Afghan soil against Pakistan. The Prime Minister expressed concern that Afghan soil is being continuously used against Pakistan, despite Pakistan’s efforts to play a positive role in Afghanistan’s peace, stability, and development.
During his official speech on Thursday, the prime minister emphasized that Pakistan wants to play a constructive role in regional development projects with neighboring countries and Central Asian states. The Prime Minister’s stance is significant, given the increasing number of attacks on Pakistan, despite security forces’ operations, and the Afghan interim government’s support for TTP and other militant groups. The relationship between the two countries has been strained due to this policy.
Previously, the Pakistani delegation had taken a strong stance on this issue during an important conference in Doha, but no positive action has been seen from Afghanistan so far, which is a matter of concern. Recently, five people were targeted in an IED attack in Bajaur, and a bomb was planted near a bridge in Takht Bhai, resulting in the martyrdom of three innocent civilians. In this situation, Pakistan’s concerns cannot be ignored, and neighboring countries must review their policies regarding proxies.
