Islamabad (Ghag Report):
Ahead of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) planned protest on November 24, the government and administration have ramped up security measures in Islamabad and Rawalpindi. Section 144 has been imposed in both cities, prohibiting gatherings and rallies until November 26. Additionally, a major operation targeting illegal Afghan residents in Islamabad is set to begin, with the capital city being secured using 1,000 shipping containers.
In response to PTI’s call for a protest, Islamabad police have organized teams for a crackdown on party members and illegal Afghan nationals. The operation will focus on the area around the 26 Number Chungi, with heavy police presence to prevent any disturbances.
In Rawalpindi, Lahore, and Attock, Punjab’s Interior Department has enlisted Rangers to ensure law and order. Two wings of Rangers will be deployed in Rawalpindi and Attock, with one company in Jhelum, starting this Friday for an indefinite period.
Meanwhile, the Federal Ministry of Interior has instructed Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Chief Secretary to ensure that government machinery is not politically exploited. This directive comes after previous instances where government resources were allegedly used during PTI’s past protests.
As protests loom, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has clarified that decisions regarding mobile and internet shutdowns fall under its jurisdiction but must be backed by Ministry of Interior orders. No such orders have been received yet, despite ongoing security preparations.
This heightened security and crackdown reflect the government’s preparedness for any disruptions during PTI’s demonstration and the upcoming diplomatic events in Islamabad.
