The Role of The Pakistan Army in Natural Disasters

By Farman Ullah

Today, Pakistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir are observing the 19th anniversary of the devastating 7.6 magnitude earthquake that struck on October 8, 2005. This tragic event resulted in the loss of over 80,000 lives and left more than 100,000 people injured, with widespread destruction of villages, roads, schools, hospitals, and bridges, and massive landslides in the affected areas. The earthquake’s impact was catastrophic, and its memories still linger, bruising the hearts and minds of those who witnessed the devastation.

The Pakistan Army: A Pillar of National Resilience in Times of Disaster

The Pakistan Army has consistently demonstrated its effectiveness and dedication in responding to natural disasters, providing vital support to affected communities. Their remarkable efforts have saved countless lives and facilitated recovery in the face of devastating crises.

Effective Response to the 2005 Earthquake

Following the 7.6 magnitude earthquake that struck Pakistan in 2005, the army quickly mobilized search and rescue operations, deploying units to heavily affected areas like Muzaffarabad and Balakot. Military personnel utilized their training and equipment to locate survivors, while the engineering corps cleared rubble with heavy machinery. Field hospitals were established to provide urgent medical care, treat injuries and offer psychological support. The army managed the evacuation of critically injured individuals and coordinated humanitarian aid, ensuring essential supplies reached those in need.

Maintaining Public Order and Rebuilding Infrastructure

In the chaotic aftermath, maintaining public order was crucial. The Pakistan Army teamed up with law enforcement to deter looting, manage crowds, and ensure equitable aid distribution. Their role in coordinating disaster response was essential, working with local governments, NGOs, and international groups to enhance aid effectiveness. Military engineers assessed and restored essential infrastructure, prioritizing repairs and reconstruction to support ongoing relief and aid distribution.

Long-term Commitment to Recovery

In the months and years following the earthquake, the Pakistan Army continued rehabilitation efforts, engaging with local communities to identify needs and align recovery initiatives. This collaboration built trust and was crucial for effective recovery. Their involvement extended to long-term reconstruction, including building new schools, hospitals, and homes with earthquake-resistant structures.

Responding to Subsequent Disasters

The Pakistan Army has consistently demonstrated its dedication to disaster response, solidifying its position as a pillar of national resilience in times of crisis. In 2010, the army conducted extensive rescue operations, distributed food, set up relief camps, and provided mobile medical units to those affected by the devastating floods. Similarly, during the 2015 earthquake, the army quickly deployed rescue teams and collaborated with civil authorities and NGOs to ensure an effective response. More recently, in 2022, the army undertook rescue operations, established relief camps, and provided food, water, and medical assistance, with a focus on rebuilding flood-resistant infrastructure.

The army’s efforts have earned national recognition and pride, with many acknowledging their role as the only institution in Pakistan with the necessary organization and resources to deliver relief in times of disaster Their dedication to disaster management is commendable, and their actions have saved countless lives and facilitated recovery in the face of catastrophic events.
